THE estimated £1.4 million cost of Prince William living off base during his training at RAF Valley will not be met by the region’s tax payers, it has been reported.
Taxpayers’ Alliance grassroots manager Fiona McEvoy criticised the Prince for deciding to live in a cottage in the region rather than on the base.
"Though he may wish to be close to his girlfriend it's unfair that the rest of us should have to pick up this considerable tab,” she said.
“With pressure on public finances, everyone is having to make sacrifices and the Royal Family shouldn't be exempt."
However, it is understood that the funds for the 15-member police security team will come from central government rather than Anglesey and Gwynedd tax payers.
Prince William, known in the RAF as Flight Lieutenant Wales, started his search and rescue training at RAF Valley in January after completing 12 months at RAF Shawcross.
RAF Valley Search and Rescue spokesman Flight Sergeant Andy Carmel that it was perfectly normal officers living off base.
“We do not restrict personnel at all if they wish to live away from the base,” he said.
A St James James’ Palace spokesperson said that the Palace did not comment on security issues.
A North Wales Police spokesperson also said that the force did not comment on security issues involving the Royal Family.
