The Sun: Labour's 10-year tax rise 51%

BRITAIN’S tax bill has increased by more than half under Labour, it was claimed yesterday.

Our burden is £517billion a year — or £20,700 per household — compared to £294billion in 1997, said a study.

Allowing for inflation, the rise is 51 per cent.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance report blamed the increase on stealth taxes and the failure to raise tax thresholds in line with earnings.

The fastest growing tax is stamp duty, bringing in £14.3billion compared to £3.5billion ten years ago.

Report author Mike Denham, an ex-Treasury economist, said Labour had used "every trick in the book" to raise taxes.
