Autumn last year saw the formation of the South West Surrey TPA from a merger between the Surrey Tax Action Group and the TaxPayers’ Alliance to campaign for lower taxes and better government.
Peter Webb, a well-known local low-tax activist, heads up the campaign with hundreds of supporters across the county. You can read his monthly campaign reports on the TPA Campaign blog, as well as on our Past Events section of the TPA website.
Over the past year as the South West Surrey TPA, Peter has become a regular feature in the Surrey Advertiser as well as other newspapers in Surrey, one example of many here, giving quotes and comment on tax and waste stories.
In January a delegation from the SW Surrey TPA met the leaders of Surrey County Council to argue for a freeze on the County Council Tax precept that would enable the Council to look through its books and find additional ways to save money for tax cuts next year.
The group also has many members writing letters, holding local councils to account, investigating Guildford Council's use of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (the law allowing councils to spy on people) as well as Nevill Shearman's campaign to withhold this year's Council Tax increase.
